From Hompland, 7 km north of Tonstad, there are several trails up the mountain west of the valley. to Steindalsknuten it is 6.3 km to go from the road if you start south of Hompland by the Hemså river. Then one walks first over a pasture field and up an old riding trail. You enter a tractor road leading into Steian. Here you turn left onto the gravel road until you see signs from the road and into the path along the east side of Øvre Løyntjønn. Parts of the trip up to Heimrestøl have some moist soil, but after that the landscape opens and trees become smaller when approaching the high mountains.
The trip continues up Grønheia and up to the Steindalsknuten which lies 748 meters above sea level. The difference in altitude from the valley is 630 meters. From Steindalsknuten you have a wonderful view of the mountains and valley. One should expect about 5 hours to go back and forth.
If you want a longer trip, the Falkeknuten is a sign and marks 3.5 km further north.
